CANDIDATE FILES FOR EXEC UNDER MINOR PARTY LABEL
Tacoma City Councilman Mike Lonergan today filed his declaration of candidacy for Pierce County Executive under the "Executive Excellence" party label. Two Democrats and one Republican have already filed for the office.
"Usually it's an uphill battle for a minor party candidate against those with a "D" or "R" after their name," Lonergan said. "In this case it's an advantage, because it reminds Pierce County voters that one candidate (Mike Lonergan) has more executive experience than the other three combined."
Because of the State's "top two" primary and Pierce County's new "ranked-choice voting," political pundits have predicted that Lonergan may be the only minor party candidate in the state to appear on the November 4 general election ballot.
Lonergan takes it one step farther, predicting victory in November. "If the voters are as smart as I believe they are, the next County Executive won't be the one that can stick up the most signs," he said. "They'll vote for change and elect a new leader with an actual vision for Pierce County's future."

Does Mike Lonergan really have grassroots support to create a new political party and become Pierce County Executive? The two-term Tacoma City Council Member will find out this Saturday morning at Oscar's Restaurant, 8820 South Hosmer in Tacoma.
Lonergan has invited friends and supporters to join him for breakfast at 9 a.m., followed by a nominating convention. The sole purpose of the convention is to place him on the November 4 ballot with the "Executive Excellence" party label. The nomination and voice vote, followed by Lonergan's acceptance speech will take place at 10 a.m.
"We've put the word out through flyers, ads and word of mouth," said Lonergan. "Now we'll find out whether or not it's going to be politics as ususal in 2008. I predict voters from both parties will get behind an executive with actual leadership experience, so we can take Pierce County government to a higher level."
Because of the recent Supreme Court decision on the top-two primary, coupled with Pierce County's new venture into "ranked choice voting," political observers have predicted that Lonergan may be the only minor party or independent candidate in Washington State with a chance to win on the November 4 ballot.
